Beth Tzedec Congregation has
had a distinguished history of religious leadership. Today, our congregation
is led by our spiritual leader and Rabbi, Rabbi Shaul Osadchey, along with the Cantor, Chazzan David Edwards.
Rabbi Shaul Osadchey
Rabbi Shaul Osadchey arrived in Calgary in July, 2009 with an overflowing sense of joy and adventure along with a passion to deepen the Jewish spiritual and religious life of Beth Tzedec and the Calgary Jewish community. He draws upon over three decades in the rabbinate and experiences that have taken him into numerous ethnic and religious communities in the United States and abroad.
Rabbi Osadchey served the Houston Jewish community for 30 years prior to coming to Beth Tzedec. He began as the founding Rabbi of the Houston Hilllel Foundation before serving Congregation Brith Shalom for 13 years. During that time, he established new and innovative educational and religious programs and involved the synagogue in issues concerning Israel, Soviet Jewry, AIDS, the homeless, and the environment. He subsequently formed Congregation Or Hadash which merged with another Conservative synagogue, Congregation Beth Am in 2001 to form Congregation Or Ami.
Rabbi Osadchey remains a community activist with a passion for interfaith, racial, healthcare, labor and other social justice issues. He is a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum and a past president of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, the Houston Rabbinical Association, and the Texas Kallah of Rabbis.
Rabbi Osadchey was born in Los Angeles, CA and is a graduate of the Los Angeles Hebrew High School, the University of California at Berkeley with majors in Religious Studies and Political Science, and Hebrew Union College from which he was ordained in New York in 1977. He holds two honorary doctorates awarded from the Jewish Theological Seminary and Hebrew Union College.
Married to Bobbie Osadchey in 2000, they have six children- Chris, Noel, Jake, Miriam, Benjamin, and Ilana- and five grandchildren- Noah, Avery, Jonah, Piper and Grant. Rabbi Osadchey's rabbinic style and philosophy has been described as democratic, egalitarian and engaging. He welcomes your participation and is available for appointments.
Cantor
David Edwards
David Edwards is honoured to serve Beth Tzedec as its Chazzan. David was born and raised in the UK and spent many years in Israel. Prior to his arrival at Beth Tzedec, he spent nine years as the Chazzan at the Lodzer Centre Congregation in Toronto. There he led services on Shabbat, Hagim and the Yamim Noraim and was involved in a full range of pastoral responsibilities.
Chazzan Edwards also served as a Chazzan at other congregations in Toronto, as well as those in Florida, Israel and England. Equally at home on the stage, Chazzan Edwards has performed in numerous concerts including an appearance last year at the convention of the Cantors Council of America in New York
Famed composer and performer of Jewish music, Srul Irving Glick z”l, once said of Chazzan Edwards “his chanting of the services and reading of the Torah are so full of feeling and sweetness.”
Chazzan Edwards brings a great deal of humility to the pulpit. He has often said, “You cannot have a Shaliach Tzibbur (leader of services) without a Tzibbur (congregation).” Accordingly, he has developed an inclusive style that provides congregants with the opportunity to be involved in services. “I want people to consider the synagogue as part of their home,’ he says. He is also skilled in leading and singing with choirs and feels they enhance the spirituality and meaningfulness of the prayer experience.
David and his wife Sandi Maker are proud to be part of Calgary’s Jewish community.
